Synopsis:
The story by Kotian isn't bad. I've just seen it before. To be fair, Devi is setting up the story proper, which occurs, in the modern day. Kotian for this second century flashback doesn't really invigorate what's been recapitulated throughout literature: a big bad, a brave, empowered female warrior leading an army to stop the big bad and in the aftermath ethereal beings symbolizing the ultimate good thanking her for her services and blindly letting the bad guy live.
Kotian does with Singh and Nanjan come up with some interesting touches that may hint to stronger material to come. The scene for instance when Bala takes over Devi's army momentarily creates a believable threat. The scene where Devi rides off on an eagle is an arresting aside.
Kotain's dialogue tries to enliven what's basically a big old Lord of the Rings type visceral blast, and for the most part he does a good job avoiding clichés. In so doing he also leaves the hero open for an arrogant personality. This may though have been intentional to show a difference in incarnations since Devi will soon manifest in the modern world.
